Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a GED or high school diploma?
Many employers, colleges, and the military require you to have a high school diploma or its equivalent (the GED) in order to work or start college classes. Having either one will be a boost to your self esteem and will open many doors of opportunity for you.
How much does it cost?
The GED test costs $144 ($36 per subject). You can take one or more exam subjects at a time. Â
Do I Qualify?
In Alabama, you can take the GED if you are at least 16 years old and have not earned a high school diploma from a public or private high school. You can also take the GED if you earned the Alabama Occupational Diploma (AOD). Â
If you are aged 16 or 17, you must apply for permission to take the GED by submitting certain documentation.  Â
Click HERE to apply for an Age Waiver for a 16- or 17-year-old.Â
Do I have to go to class?
While it is possible to take the GED test without attending classes, our Adult Education instructors are ready and eager to help you prepare. Best of all, our classes are free of charge, and you can earn opportunities to take the GED for free. Contact your local Adult Education program to learn more about the benefits of studying in class and getting your test paid for. Â
If you want to take the test without taking classes, visit www.GED.com or call 1-877-EXAM-GED (392-6433). You can pay with a credit or debit card. You will need a valid photo ID on the day you test.Â
Can I retake it if I fail?
Yes. There’s no waiting period in Alabama if you need to retake a subject area test the first or second time. After your third try, you must wait 60 days between each attempt.
What does the test look like?
It includes multiple choice, gridding, graphing and essay question formats in four key areas of education:Â Â
Reading Through Language Arts (150 minutes including a 10-minute break), Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes), Â
Science (90 minutes)Â
Social Studies (90 minutes)Â
If you take the test all at once, you have a maximum of about 7.5 hours to complete it. But remember that you don’t have to take it all at one time if you’re not ready!Â
In order to pass, you must score 145 in each subject area. Â
Where do I take the test?
Click here to go to the GED Testing Service website to find testing locations. Â
How long do I wait for scores?
Typically you will receive your scores within hours of completing the test. At most it can take up to three business days, but that is uncommon. Â
Are there accommodations?
Yes. If you need accommodations, you can request them. Click this link for further instructions: Accommodations – GED.Â
