Frequently Asked Questions

The Nontraditional High School Diploma Option (HSDO) is for residents ages 19 and older. You have two options. Option 1 is for residents who attended an Alabama public high school, earned enough credits to graduate, but did not pass the high school graduation exam. Option 2 is for residents who earned 10 or more credits from an Alabama public high school but need additional credits for graduation.

Yes. Upon completing all requirements, you will receive a regular Alabama High School Diploma.

The HSDO process starts with you, the student, requesting that a Transcript Audit form be sent from the local high school or school system that you last attended to the participating local Adult Education program. We prefer for the transcript audit forms to be sent electronically from the local high school or school system to the Adult Education Program. However, you may hand-deliver the form if it is within a sealed envelope and contains the official school seal. The form must have the signature of the counselor/registrar and principal/administrator.

From there, our Adult Education team will guide you on the next steps to take.

The classes and the transcript request are free to the student. However, for your actual diploma, some school systems may charge HSDO students the same fee that is charged to traditional high school students.

The high school diploma and transcripts are issued by the last Alabama public high school or local school system that you last attended (determined by local board policy). The actual date that you complete the graduation requirements will be the graduation date that is listed on the high school transcript and diploma.
